Right after my graduation I was approached by my thesis supervisor with the proposal to participate in a research project made in collaboration between the Computer Science Department and the Architecture one. The Architectural Laboratory (LaborA) was looking to build better infrastructure around two main pieces of hardware:

  • A holographic table, capable of displaying 3D scenes with the aid of 2 pairs of glasses. Allowing for two different perspectives.
  • A dome utilizing an array of 4 projectors, able to thus reproduce a full 360 virtual environment, similarly to Disney's StageCraft (albeit on a smaller scale).
The lab was also equipped with VR headsets and was exploring avenues for leveraging them for architectural surverying, restauration efforts and research projects. As the only researcher in the main team with a computer science background, I focused on integrating the modern game engines as part of a real time pipeline used to explore GIS based projects and photogrammetric point clouds via these new pieces of hardwer. This led to the creation of custom code interfacing with the hardware SDK as well as the creation of tailored shaders in HLSL for both Unreal Engine and Unity, to adapt the data to the new viewing media. I also mentored students working on Master thesis projects leveraging the hardware and built vertical slices for potential stakeholders interested in the new technology.
